Newbie:17t vs 19t motor for Stampede?

Post by Todd » Wed, 28 Jan 1998 04:00:00

Looking to get another motor for my Stampede, I looked in deja news and
saw 17t  single Speedgems mentioned..     I would think that a 17 would
lower my run time too much and a Speedgem 19t  double would be better...
but then I never seem to see the 19 mentioned at all?  Is a 19t  motor
not much of an upgrade from the cheap (read REALLY cheap) 540 stinger
that came with the truck?
thanks for any info, and for reading yet another newbie/motor question
:)

I think the stinger is a 20 Turn stock motor, so a 19 Turn modified
wouldnt be much faster. Your runtime with a 19T mod will be about the
same as it is now. The 17 T would be better if you want more speed - i
wouldnt worry too much about the runtime differece of a 19T and 17T.

Almost anything is better than the "Stinger" motor.  I ran with a Matrix
Stock in my Stampede for a while, then I put in the Speedgems 17T Saphire.
Whooee!  That sped things up a bit!  Then I gave it about 15 deg. more
timing and really got a boost.  I didn't lose much run time, but man did
I gain acceleration!  I recommend the Speedgems Saphire for the Stampede
as the perfect match.  You better have a slipper on it because you can get
some _good_ airtime!

Well here is my experience, I have a X-star Stock motor in my T3 and like
you wanted more speed.  I was also concerned about runtime since I use
1400's, but decided to get a Kyosho Endoplasm motor, it is a 16Tx2 motor,
MAN DID IT MAKE A DIFFERENCE!!  I have noticed no real drop in runtime, I am
still able to run with my stock buddies right to the end...  I would say get
a nice speedgem, for the price of 30 it is a good deal.

Thanks for all the information!... I went with the Speedgem 17t... I
ordered the slipper too...  Can't wait for the stuff to get here... I
bought some cheap s***ply-board for around four bucks and started to
launch the truck over the backyard picnic table...   I must say, the
Stampede may not be able to run/win on the track against the racing
trucks... but I've already hit a tree, stuffed it under my car, and
almost shot the whole thing down a drain pipe
and no damage...It's a great basher truck...
thanks again for the info

Todd,
I Think DLC has given you the definitive answer since he's done it.
I just want to carry the string a little farther with this question.
Won't a 18+ wind modified with bearing and mild (6-8 deg.)timing
actually give as good or better run time due to the efficiency of the
bearings over bushings???
My first mod was a 15x4 (Speedgems-Jade).  I did not notice any loss of
run time as long as I kept the gearing to 5-7 teeth over the wind
(15+5-7= 20-22) in a XXTcr.
