Just Finished my 1st Stained Glass Piece! Frame Suggestions??

Post by Caryn Dubelk » Wed, 27 May 1998 04:00:00

Hi all, I've been lurking but have to share my joy in finishing a piece!  I
have yet to patina it, but I'm e***d and it turned out well.  It's a 16" x
20" folk art tulip design in teal, turquoise, blue and clear.  How do I go
about framing this thing?  Are there any good instructions out there?

Thank you for reading!

There are two basic steps to framing it.
1. Put a zinc came border on it. Basic widths for the zinc came are 9/32, 3/8
and 1/2 inch. I'd recommend 3/8" for that sized project. Miter the corners for
strength and good looks, solder the corners and wherever solder lines intersect
the border zinc came. If you want the came to match the patina of the solder
lines, get some Solder Magic Action Tin, (it's like a solder paint for tinning
with an iron) and tin the whole border. Wash your project with Dawn dishwashing
liquid (ONLY DAWN!) or if thats not available Oxy-Stop or Classique Flux
Neutralizer. Then apply the patina and finish by polishing up with Kem-O-Pro
Finishing Compound. Buff to a fine finish.

2. If you want a wooden frame, then just by the wood stock, cut to size, insert
the panel with the zinc came border attached and hang the durn thing. (-:

If you're going to frame your project in zinc, then you could mitre the
two bottom corners and ***joint the top corners. Be sure to place the
top peice of zinc onto the panel so that it sits "inside" the two side
peices. Then you can use a product called "Handy Hangers". These are
brass hangers that are designed to slip into the open holes of the zinc.
Slip the hangers down into the zinc and solder in place. if you're going
to use a wood frame, I've always found it easier to use a frame that has
a rabbit dado versus a slot dado. You just set your panel into the back
of the frame and either glue the splines or pre-drill some holes and use
some small finish nails. Good luck, and congrats on your project.
