Tiffany Lamp Shade???

Tiffany Lamp Shade???

Post by Loren L Leemkui » Fri, 17 Oct 1997 04:00:00

I'm trying to find out if the lampshade I saw for sale is really what it
appears to be.  It is a 16" daffidil shade. The patina and glass look
good. Quality is excellant. The shade is signed and numbered, but the
signiture information is on a tag, like foil, inside the rim, not
stamped into the mettal of the rim ifself. I'd like to know if this is a
way that these shades were sometimes signed, or am I looking at a
reproduction.

The shade is on a Sea Weed base, mismatched but I'm sure that is
genuine.

If any one can tell me a value of the shade or the base, I be very
grateful.

Thanks

This is Howard...........To the best of my knowledge from your limited
info, I do not think there was any original 16" daffodil by Tiffany. The
tag id can be easily duplicated and I have toyed with having an engraver
make tags for me to solder on a shade.

The price may also give one a clue.....Tiffanies (real and simple and
poorly colored any mainly geometric) may start for around $6,000.

If you think you have found an original....get thee to a library and start
doing some research. MANY MANY more lamps than Tiffany EVER did are
purported to be "Tiffanies" including the ***from the 3rd and 4th world
countries.

Morein fo to me, better info to you!....enjoy, H

Can't give you a value, but I got e***d reading your description of
the soldered tag; that's EXACTLY the way the Tiffany Studios signed
their shades.  I've seen several that had lost the tags but the solder
imprints were still there.  However; if it is sitting on a Tiffany base,
the base will carry an imprint as well.  Take the shade off and turn the
base over.  Depending on the era, the marks will be very clear and
distinctive; "Tiffany Studios"  "Tiffany Studios, New York"  "Tiffany
Decorating CO."  or someting like that.  There will also be a three or
four digit number which is the product identification for the shade.

As to price, I've seen his shades going for figures larger than twice my
anual income.  If this shade bears the marks I've described and you can
possibly afford it, grab it.  Otherwise, tell me where it is and I will.

Thanks and good luck,
Jerry
