Cross-posted to rcb, rcj, rcm, rcp-c:

I don't know about the rest of you, but I'm getting really tired of
reading this bozo's ads, posted every other day. _I_ certainly
wouldn't do business with someone who has to continuously bash me over
the head with their catalog AND doesn't care that every time he spams
an ad to UseNet he's _costing_ millions of potential customers money
for storage and transfer of millions of copies of the thing. What do
the rest of you think?

Aren't  you tired of so-called "business-people" who can't be bothered
to follow a few simple rules that the rest of us follow? Who don't
CARE that UseNet isn't "free advertising," and that the cost of their
ads falls on US? Who feel that UseNet is _their_ , personal path to
fame and fortune (at the expense of others!)?

If you are, e-mail this guy, his postmaster, and every other spammer
and ad-poster that you see here and in every other newsgroup you read.
Don't leave it up to the few "squeaky wheels."  A united front of
protest against these rule-breakers will get the attention of
postmasters and sysadmins a lot faster than one or two voices crying
out from the ***-wilderness.

SPEAK UP, FIGHT BACK, and let's take UseNet BACK from the spammers!
Thank you, see you at the polls. :)

Dear Chuck
Yea!!!   So glad you said that!   I'm tired or reading spams in my e-mail
and in
the newsgroups.  I pay for my ads and so should these creeps.

Great!!!  ...and you can take it back too, here's how...

Skip the message (complete with full headers) to the postmaster for review, and
ask that the subscriber be informed of the terms of service with that company,
and that the sender/offender also be asked to recognize the non-commercial
policy of the usenet newsgroups...

It makes zero sense to debate with a zealot who thinks his service/product is
just "too important" to not get the word out to everyone...  ...but that
service provider, once having gotten a few dozen letters will start resenting
the hassle and give the offender a hollar {Grin}...

The offender/butthead will doubtless listen to the folks who have his phone
line between the jaws of the sheers, ready to sever his/her/it's connection...
...sortta funny how that works :)

What NOT to do is waste more time with new threads of endless whining and
debate over the realitive merits/heredity/intelligence of the poster, who's
obviously not gonna give a rip, because when they're on top of their own little
mountian addressing the masses their inspired by what they see as a devine
mission to spread the word...  Dweebs...  Asking them to take their commercial
advertisment for "Wholesale below cost jewelry" or "Rolexes" or
"Gold by the mile" or gemstones mined on the dark side of Venus...

Tip?
When skipping the offending ad "for review" by their postmaster be very nice...
 Professional...
If you fume, and rant and say "What the..." and "Why do you let..." you'll not
convay the message...  You need to know they have a huge job, and it's really
hard keeping their subscriber's happy...  They are yer friend, and can help to
make this (and all) newsgroups better...
Let "them be the judge" and let them know you respect their hard work...  I've
yet to see a service provider approached with understanding and a good cause
who didn't do the right thing...

You are right, Ray, but sometimes there is no "postmaster" account -- I have
had things bounce back, And sometimes the offender IS the postmaster or owner
of the system from which the spam (or other ad) is sent. (Just a reminder that
it doesn't always work as hoped for.)

When you say "skip", is that something different from forwarding? Not a term I
am familiar with.

Hi Sherry,

In the event that there is no "postmaster" account, which is in fact a violation
of RFC regulations, you have the option of cutting off the whole site with a large
axe.  Do the following very easy steps... at a UNIX shell prompt...

 % whois butthead.com

This will give you the name-service provider for butthead.com.  You then send a
letter to the name-service provider complaining that butthead.com (a) is spamming
Jthe USENet, and (b) the offending site does not have a Postmaster address in
violation of RFC regulations.  This can cause butthead.com a lot of very real
problems, since RFC regulations are very specific in that every site connected
to the Internet must have a Postmaster address, and that the mail sent to this
address must be read by a real human being.

Mind you, gems from the dark side of Venus may be worth taking a look at.

Hope it helps...

Dave.

Peter,

I just got my hands slapped for commenting on a spammed ad for
discount diamonds yesterday, I was threatened with someting vile,
disconnect or cancellation, I forget the exact terminology.  Can you give
me the new rules?  I have been off the system for a few months, and things
seem to have changed while I was gone, something about not cross posting
to something.ott whatever that may be.  Guess we can talk about an ad, but
not if we include it in the body of the message, but I would like to be
sure.

Also, I can not remember how to get my address to be hyperactive, can
you tell me??

                       Thanks

Actually,

the fact that you try "postmaster", support, and perhaps a visit/search for
the site staff is good...   ...ads can, and will, ***up usenet, and besides
the web is the place where the action is anyway {Grin}...

...as a system administrator you "get it", and even as a republican businessman
"I get it" but those stories of "millions of users" makes the palms of young
creative marketiers sweat...  ..so out comes the spray can an there's a message
with cryptic meaning on yer garage door in the morning...

...sigh...  ...progress....
