Arrowmont report--Thursday

Post by Jeannine » Sat, 13 Sep 1997 04:00:00

Not too much to report from today as I had no workshops.  However
something REALLY exciting happened.  Lynne Wardrop and I got our chess swap
pieces!!  Aubrey is going to get a set to Arlene Thayer, so hopefully you
will all be able to enjoy the pieces soon--and envy the heck out of us
swappers!!!

Judith Skinner came for the second half of the week.  She has some
wonderful stick pins in the conference store and they are affordable for
me, so I bought one.  I paid for it, put it on and left the store.  One of
the women in the conference came up to me and said:  "Oh, I see you bought
a Skinner *** pin!"

Still no scandalous behavior (sorry, Peg).  According to some who were at
Ravensdale, Arrowmont is a very quiet conference.  Perhaps it's because
everyone is housed all over the place.  Some in dorms and cottages, and
others in motels.  I'm sure that some of the dorms get a little noisy at
times.  Don't give up, though.  Tomorrow night (Friday) Accent Imports and
the NW Guild are sponsoring a get-together, but it's at a coffee house so
I'm not holding out too much hope.  And Saturday night, there's a picnic in
Smokies National Park.  If we smuggle in some hooch, there's a chance of
some marginal rowdiness.

Til tomorrow,
Jeannine

Gee Peg, Jeannine pooped out & left the bash at the National park early
- She missed the fun when a bear crashed the party & was walking around
on the tables - he even headed for the big tray of brownies (Jeanne
Sturdevant rescued them before he got there) then he dove into the
trash.  Does this  count as scandal?

Lynne (and all who missed Arrowmont),
Did he really get on the tables?!  Was that the end of the party?  I
left for home on Saturday afternoon and skipped the picnic.  There
were multiple bear sightings last week, usually late at night.  As I
was coming back to the dorm around midnight on Thursday, I saw a bear
in the parking lot by Hughes Hall, so I know it's possible and am
wondering exactly how much of that story to believe.  The bear I saw
didn't move too fast or seem too interested in me, so I followed him
(at a reasonable distance, of course).   I tried to take some pictures
of it and will post them on my web page if they come out -- I figure
it's doubtful, but you never know, maybe I'll get lucky.
Anybody else have any good bear stories?

You mean that this actually happened!!!.........or are the 2 of you in a
*** to pull my leg?

Lynne, I thought you were joking. Maybe you +should+ have let him have
those brownies after all.

Kathy Gregson is going to be suicidal!!!  When we drove about 60 miles
through the park and up to Clingman's Dome on Friday, she was hoping and
praying we'd see a bear.  RATS AND RAISINS!!!!  (to quote an old friend of
mine).

Hey, Lynne---there must have been at least 40 cameras there.  Did anyone,
like celaclay, get a picture??

Not I, said the little yellow coward.

I was FAR too busy hiding behind Kathy Dewey to take pictures of the bear
and I, too, am hoping someone bigger, stronger and braver managed to get a
decent pic.  I got Becky Preston to snap off a shot with my camera, but all
she got was a big black blur (she said she didn't feel comfortable
interrupting the bear's snack to ask him to strike a pose).  I did get the
rest of my pictures developed and SOME of them came out nice, but it
appears I am a much better polymer clay crafter than a photographer :-(

Good thing I have a good memory, since that's about all I have in terms of
visual images to look back on.......

Boy, that's the truth!  I find it amazing that the people of Gatlinburg
manage, rather casually it seemed, to live with the bears.  In my home
state of Wyoming, the powers that be(Nat'l Park Service) decided that
the bears were just too dangerous to have around and transported them all
to the high country.  Of course, there is one great difference-the bears
at Yellowstone also include gruzzlies.

So that's what we get for pooping out and going home early.  What a
marvelous time we had, new friends made, etc., etc.
