Phone wire ...???? HELP!!!!

Post by Douglas & Jennifer Braecke » Mon, 28 Jul 1997 04:00:00

Hello all,
I really want to work with the phone wire I keep hearing about...I have
seen several people mention getting phone wire from phone company
workers...I have two in my family and they are both willing to give me
any and all extras I want or need..the only thing is...they need to know
what "gage" ???? it is...I think that is the thickness of the
wire....???

Can anyone help me? Please, it is very frustrating to have a source for
this stuff and not be able to get it....they are 6 hours away so I have
to describe it to them over the phone...they have no concept of what I
will be doing with it and don't understand my explanations....if anyone
can please let me know what to ask for.

Thanks sooooo much,

Jennifer B.

Hi,
I've only seen one type of phone wire. wow, that would be fun if it
comes in different thicknesses. The important thing is to be sure it is
covered with PVC coating which will bond with the clay. Computer wire
generally isn't the right kind. The stuff I have came as a bundle of
different colored strands inside a gray plastic wrapping. It is used a lot
in office buildings and sometimes you can get it if an office is getting a
new phone system put in.

I just read that the kind we want, that has a lot of colors, is called
26 pair.

And that is already more than I know.  Please let us know if even that
little bit of information helps--so that when I go asking for mine,
I'll know what I'm asking for!

Thanks,

Ok, I'll ask.  What are you doing with phone wire?

Phone wire ...???? HELP!!!!

One thing I have done is to wind a piece around a thin dowel, pencil,
etc creating curled and then embed both ends into clay on pins, jewelry,
etc.  Also, I think some of the wire attaching Pier Voulkos' beads
(leaves, shells, etc) were  embedded telephone wire since it adds a nice
continuity of color.  This wire (the colored strands--black, yellow,
red,  and green) is inside a beige plastic wrap which needs to be
stripped away so you can get at the pretty telephone wire.  Also, on the
recent bug swap, on one pin, the bug legs were black telephone wire.
Just a few of the uses for it.  We are building a house and my husband
just brought home a length of telephone wire our electrician had
discarded so I have a small supply now.  On the jewelry curlyque I
mentioned above, I have also used gold colored wire (not
telephone)--kind of gives another interesting look to pieces.

Okay people here it is. Who is going to Arrowmont?

I still have not recieved my confirmation yet, nor have they cashed my
check but I'm confident that I'm going :)

If name tags are available there don't you people think it would be a good
idea to write your username as well as your real name on these tags? It
would be a dirty rotten shame to be standing next to someone I know well
and not know it! Does anybody have an identification idea for the news
group people? Or can we set a time and place to meet at Arrowmont early
on?

I'm going, although how I'm PAYING for it remains a mystery! (Partly by the
arranged-for article on Arrowmont which will appear in Jewelry Crafts -- be
sure to buy that issue so Kary keeps me busy!! ;^) )

At Ravensdale, we tried to get everybody who goes online together at lunch one
day -- it was the only time everybody got together, without a "session" of
some kind. And many of us wore night-glow stars of some kind. Maybe we could
come up with something like that, although we should be more uniform -- some
stars were a quarter inch across, some four inches -- made it less helpful!

Can you just buy this wire somewhere, or do
you have to know somebody who knows somebody?
Thanks,

Whew!  I thought I was the only one still waiting on a confirmation!

These are all good ideas!  I think I remember the Internet folks going to
Ravensdale '96 agreed to make and wear glow-in-the-dark stars in order to
identify each other; what can we make and wear for Arrowmont '97?  We could go
with polymer hearts this time and maybe decide on a specific color?  (since most
of the classes are during the day)

Planning to meet as a group would be great, too!  But we need to take into
account that many people are only attending either the first or second half of
the week.  Perhaps we can meet sometime on Wednesday that week?  Or Thursday
morning, whenever there will be the most people around!

I can't wait to meet everyone there!

Cecelia (cella in SD) has an idea, but she's been waiting for everyone to
get his/her confirmation before bringing it to the group.  Are you there,
Cella?  Her e-mail is:

I'd like everyone who is going ( LURKERS, TOO) to e-mail me with screen
name and real name so that I can compile a list for the group.  I'll post
it on the group around 8/25 and will print up lists to take with me.

You don't have to know anyone to get it.  When you see a phone co. van
parked somewhere, go ask if he/she has any throw-away pieces.  They may be
a foot or so long.  I checked the yellow pages and found a supplier of
telephone cable near my house.  They were glad to find some scraps for me.
