Matte Finish?????

Matte Finish?????

Post by Douglas & Jennifer Braecke » Tue, 01 Jul 1997 04:00:00

I need to know what type of finish I can use on granitix that won't be
glossy, it has gold powder on it so I need to seal it but I don't want
any shine....

I have been told to not use water based finishes...why and how do I
know?

Thanks for any and all help....

Matte Finish?????

Fimo makes a non-waterbased Matte Varnish.  It comes in either a nail
polish sized bottle, or a small jar, and the bottle/jar has a red cap
(whereas the Fimo gloss varnish has a black top)  I've used it, and it
produces no shine.  I've used the Fimo waterbased varnish too, but it
tends to get 'tacky' in warm, humid weather.....it also doesn't stick to
the clay as well.

Matte Finish?????

Post by J&T Ega » Wed, 02 Jul 1997 04:00:00

i'm glad this subject came up. i've had a time with the matte. the
first bottle i got was fine and gave me a great matte finish.
but with the second  bottle, the white stuff at the bottom was hard.
it wouldn't stir up  with a toothpick, just stayed chunky and the bead i
used turned out shiny. i was BUMMED.
can someone tell me how to use the matte? is the white stuff supposed
to mix entirely with the rest of the varnish? unfortunately it doesn't
come with instructions.:-) and apparently i need them. how do i keep from
getting another dud bottle next time?
        thanks,
        theresa

Yes, the white stuff should mix entirely with the rest of the varnish, so
the finish comes out matte instead of glossy......if it doesn't mix in,
even after vigorous shaking and stirring, I would return it to where you
purchased it (or you can let the white stuff stay on the bottom and use as
gloss <VBG>!!!!)

Try Flecto Diamond Varathane from your hardware store.  They make a
matte surface that is really nice, it's waterbase and bonds to polymer.
It doesn't crack or yellow either.
