help w/ cane

Hello,

I just started working with canes. I made a cane from Scupltey III, and I've
had trouble reducing it. I let it cool overnight (actually I chilled it in
the refrigerator). Was this an error on my part? After chilling it, I couldn't
even squeeze it a little. Even after letting it warm up to room temperature, I
had trouble reducing it. Maybe I'm too impatient. How long does it usually
take to reduce a cane from a 2" diameter to a 1" diameter or smaller? 10
minutes? 1/2 hour? I am very worried about distortion, so maybe it's making me
take a long time. I just didn't see much progress after about 10 minutes, so I
gave up and decided to ask for a little advice.

Sculpey has the lowest tensile strength of all of the polymer clays, so
either it is ;too mushy not to distort when you reduce it.  Or, I guess
you chilled it too long and it got too hard.  I and others have had luck
with chilling either half and hour or overnight and had no problems
reducing it.  If it is too hard, just keep rolling the cane until it gets
smaller.  I usually take about 5 minutes to reduce a 2" cane made of
Sculpey, although I don't use Sculpey much any more because of the low
tensile strength causing you to lose fine detail when you get too small.
