Natural Body & Bath Products

I have a home business creating body and bath products
from local grown flowers and essential oils.  I have
sold to gift shops and attended crafts fairs.  This
week, I was asked to bring in samples to a larger
specialty gift shop.  The buyer asked me if I had
permits and approvals for the body and bath product
line.

I was really surprised at this question, but it does
seem legit.  Has any other crafter/home business
person run into this?  Do I need a special permit.

  Suzanne,
State laws differ with regards to the types permits that one must have
to do business, and also with regards to health regulations connected with
products made for personal use.  You might start by first contacing your
state's Small Business Administration.  You might also check your
directory for a listing for SCORE -- which is a consortium of retired
business executives that help new folk in business.  One familiar with
your type of business could help to advise you.

I wonder if the buyer was thinking along the lines of
an FDA-type approval since your products are being applied
to the body, as opposed to a permit to sell crafts.

Hi Suzi:

Never having tried to sell my products, I would not know about
permits, and agree with others that this may depend upon your
area.

However, I _HAVE_ heard many strong recommendations to always
list the ingredients and include a disclaimer to the effect
that, despite being natural substances, some have been known to
produce allergic reactions in susceptible persons, and that you
should not use them if you are or believe yourself to be
allergic to any of those substances.

Good luck!

Hi - you need to check with your local health dept & state requirements.
At the LEAST you must list all ingredients and it would be wise to add the
usual - not to be taken internally etc.  I would advise contacting your
health dept etc (they are mainly interested in the conditions under which
you produce & package your items) and then go and check out dept. stores
for products similar to yours and find out what they list in the way of
disclaimers etc.
