Just got this month's issue of Toyfare w/ coverage of the 2001 Toy Fair in New
York. There's quite a few Gundam announcements here that I hadn't heard
before, so I thought I'd share them.
In the U.S. Bandai will be releasing figures from MSG, 08th MS Team, War in the
Pocket, and Stardust Memory in Spring or Summer.
First up is 'The Hero Collection' which will consist of 4 1/2-inch figures of
pilots from Gundam Wing and Mobile Suit Gundam. On the GW side, there'll be
the five pilots, along with Zechs and Relina. For MSG, there will be Char,
Amuro and four characters I don't recognize(haven't seen MSG). Two are Feds
and two are Zeon. None appear to be articulated.
Next there's a bunch of MSIA announcements. I've never been too interested in
MSIAs before, so I'm not sure if all of these are new. MSIAs of G-Fighter, a
Zaku, a Gelgoog, a Zeong, a "Kempfer"(which I take to mean Kampfer), a Mazera
Attack Tank, the RX-78-NT-1, and a GM are listed. They're not mentioned, but I
also see MSIAs of a Dom, a Gogg, three different RX-78-2s, and a GunCannon.
All of the RX-78-2s appear to be the same figure, but each with minor
variations. Two are in the standard RX-78-2 colors. Of these two, one has
it's panel lines inked(along with what looks like a piece of gum holding the
shield onto the arm. Not good.) while the other is not inked, but seems to
have decals the other lacks. The other RX-78-2 is painted red, black and
white. The caption for this one simply reads "RX-78 with Transport Ship." I
can't say that I like how the RX-78 looks with these colors, but the transport
looks pretty intricate w/ a large opening cargo section and what appear to be
removable missiles.
And lastly, two interesting(and also confusing) announcements: 11-inch
transforming(?) figures of the "DGP01Fb"(again, I assume they mean GP01Fb) and
the GP02 from Stardust Memory will be released. I own the anime of 0083 and I
don't remember too much transforming going on. I can only guess that they
consider a removable core fighter for the GP01Fb and those movable extra large
shoulder boosters for the GP02 to be "transforming." Both are pictured, but
only the GP02 gets a close-up shot. In the shot by itself, the GP02 looks
really nice. It desperately needs it's lines inked, but other than that it's
quite excellent. The other photo shows both MSs side by side, but at a
distance from the camera. I can't make out a lot of details on the GP01, but
it looks to be a good bit out of proportion(going by my memory of the anime and
my MG version). First off, the GP01's legs look way too large. Also, the Full
Vernions are HUGE. They have to be way out of proportion. And, the shield
seems too tall. The bottom is touching the ground, and yet the top of the
shield lines up with the top of the GP01's head.
I'll also mention that there's one shot of the Gundam booth that shows most of
the things I've mentioned displayed in little groupings. In this shot there is
a group of vehicles/ships that I can't make out too clearly, but right above
them is a foot-long Albion that looks sweet. Hopefully we'll be getting those
too. Also, manning the booth are a guy dressed as Amuro and a woman dressed as
Char sans mask and helmet. Pretty weird.
