Well, nothing definitely though there are alot of apocryphical explanations
(including fan made up acronyms for most of the names). Here's what I recall
(and bear in mind that I don't believe most of these):

Zeons:
Zaku: Allegedly Japanese slang word for "Small Fry", as in fish.
Gogg: This is really the name of a Babylonian Giant.
Zugock: Really Zu-Gog, as in "Super Gogg"
Hygog: Really "Hyper Gogg"
Dom: German for "Dome" on account of its head (sounds contrived to me)
Dom Tropen: Dom "Tropical" (German).
Kampfer: German for "Fighter"
Elmeth: A corrupted translitteration of "Hermes"
Quebley: Similarly, a corruption of "Cybele" (the goddess).
New Zeal: "New Zeal"!
A bau Aku: Name of a legendary mystical serpent
Guerra Doga: "War Dog"
Jagd Doga: "Hunting Dog"
Alpa Azeriru: "Alpha Azrael" (my opinion on this one)
I had heard that "Sazabi" was the Japanese word for "Comet", but I've been
told by several people that it was not the case! So no idea what that means!

Of course, there are the Probe-isms, such as Bygzam= "Big Sam",
Val-Waro="Valhalla".  I wonder too, if "The O" and "Dijeh" (I.e., DJ) can be
named after current events kinds of things, if "Rick Dias" is actually "Rick
Dees" and if alot of the other (particularly ZG and ZZG) names are inside
jokes. Alot of the ZG and ZZG MS names seem to be taken from mythology, etc.
Won't get into that here though.

Federation Side:
Jimu: Traditional pronunciation of "GM"! I.e., "Gundam Massproduced"
Alex: "RX" pronounced "Ar-ex" I.e., "Alex", cute, eh?
GP-01/02/03: This series is named after manly flowers. OOohhh.
Most of their other names are pretty self-explanatory, though I keep
thinking "Gunperry" is really supposed to be "Gunferry" and other such
business.
Jegan: Given the traditionally uninspired Federation names for MS, I wonder
if this is really supposed to be G-Gun or something like that. (Especially
given Heavygun, and Gun-EZ, the names of later GM-types).

I remember reanding somewhere that ZAK stood for Zeon Armored Kommando.
Don't know how official that is, though.

Sa-zabi.  Once again, Char's idea of a joke, consider that he personally killed
one Zabi, and caused another's demise.

It's not, it's one of those magazine-inspired fan created acronyms...
just like how they made Gundam, Mobile Suit, Mobile Armor, etc into acronyms
as well.
I've heard "Zeon Air Kommand" too as another explanation (Not as good as
yours, but equally invalid!)

That was the acronym used in the English-translated Gundam novels, so it
has _some_ weight to it.  Though it also has the Red Comet named "Sha" and
a mobile armor called the "Vig Zam."
