I know this is off-topic, but I need help desperately.  I am regular reader
and contributor to this newsgroup.  But I am also interested in maps.  So I
found this binary newsgroup entitled alt.binaries.maps.  So what do I get?
Thousands of messages from the same person (?), all in binary code, and each
is 250 KB long.  I simply cannot get rid of them.  I deleted over 600 today,
only to get additional thousands in its place.  They arrive at one-minute
intervals.  Clicking on one or more messages and trying to delete them will
not work: the delete button is inactive.  Catch up tries to open the
messages.  Any suggestions?
The subject of the articles (?) is given below.

PLEASE DO NO OPEN IT   You might end up with the same problem.

Subject: Post : Anouk - Hotel New York  [02/17] - "02 - Anouk - Heaven
knows.mp3" yEnc (20/24)
Date: Saturday, January 08, 2005 6:14 PM

Messages are sent daily, and the latest are today  I do not know the
earliest date.

G'day Tony,
You should really post to a dedicated site for the best assistance.
I always have several NG's available from the Microsoft server.
For general Win98 (and others) advice
I use
http://groups-beta.google.com/group/microsoft.public.win98.gen_discus...

Your question could also use OE NG.

If these are not easily available to use, for you,
let me know, and I'll post the query on your behalf.
You should get an answer within 30 minutes.

Rodney

If you're using Outlook Express you can limit the number of message
headers downloaded at one time via Tools - Options - Read.

You can block one particular sender by selecting his message and
clicking on Tools - Block Sender.
Other newsgroup readers should have similar capabilities.

The file you reference is one of a multipart MP3 music file, not  a map.

Tony:

Further to Bill's comments, I highly recommend
getting  the AGENT news reader. It costs a few $
but is WELL worth it.
http://www.forteinc.com/main/homepage.php

Yesterday I was in a group with 45,000 new messages.
I downloaded the headers only and sorted them (you
can sort headers by date, sender, subject, size etc.),
highlighted 44,950 and marked them READ - WITHOUT
having to download the full messages. (only subject
lines are downloaded at first).

Then I resorted the 50 messages that I had chosen
and downloaded the text in about one minute.

Total time was about 3 minutes for 45,000 messages.

I know I can, but I cannot get rid of those that are already
in -- thousands.  I have now unsubscribed to the newsgroup.

Then the music was posted  on the wrong newsgroup.
I really wish there were a bona fide map newsgroup.

Tony,
If you have one of the earlier model PC boxes,

http://www.FoundCollection.com/

seen here with the large double mousewheel for ***,

The yEnc download dial, is 3rd from left, near where the printer cables
attach.

I want one!  All this time, they kept this one from me when I was
watching the "Outer Limits".

RAND, eh?  Looks Like Khrushchev around the time of the Cuban Missile
Crisis.

R - Russian
A - Automated
N - Nuclear
D - Devices

[ Inc. ]

Yep - one in every American household by 2004, therefore allowing them
to be detonated from the Kremlin at will.

I still want one!

[ Still wondering where the disk packs go, though... ]

Hmmm....  Teletype AND Fortran?  Weren't they pushing
things a bit there!  Looks a bit like my first home-build,
which was a "Nascom-1" kit.  Programmed directly in Z80
machine code (couldn't afford the massive 32k-basic ROM!).

Tracy, I reckon  you would be the only person on this NG
with an office big enough to support it.

The rest of us, are confined to little boxes like Victors Office.
we would have to place the printer in the en-suite.

(My office will only support a 15" screen)

Thanks a lot, Rodney.  I am fascinated by the map of Australia; I never knew
that it was originally called New Holland.  On second thought, it is natural
as it was discovered in 1644 by Abel Tasman, a Dutch mariner.  What a
contrast between his country and Australia!

Actually, it's probably smaller than most of the people here - at the
moment.

Heh!  Maybe also a little wall rearranging as well.

Not only that, but the power requirements to run that beast may be
able to supply a full load of juice to the entire street I'm on.

I don't think the power company will like that too much...

But I do remember all of the blinking lights and all that when I was a
kid.  Cool stuff!
